Arkansas Dirt Riders

So I'm installing a slightly used MX51 (NOT MT16) on Kaylee's TTR.  I can't seem to get one section of the bead to seat. I inflate/deflate about 10times, each time that one section is getting closer.  Well my regulator was set on 80psi...so, I crank her up to about 120psi.  Proceed to inflate once again, this time it appears that the bead is seating...I sit there with my hand on the hub, thinking "damn this is alot of pressure, I really shouldn't......" BOOOM!!!

Tube (UHD) blew out and blew THROUGH the MX51.  I escaped with only ringing ears, soil shorts, and another life lesson in the books.  Scared the pee-waddling out of Vonda and the kids from up at the house. Explosions coming from my shop are never a good thing.

I sure don't blame the MT16.  I should have stopped long before that point.  Needless to say future tire mountings will be done with a considerable amount of care.

First of all, MT16's are really hard to mount! Of all the year's of mounting tyres, they are one of the hardest. Second, Once they get over the rim - the hard part - they inflate up using only a reasonable amount of air pressure - say 20 to 30 pounds. Never in all my tyre repairs have I seen one do this. You indeed are a lucky cat. I wouldn't work in that shop any more. Some very bad things have gone on in there to you. By the by, what did you do for a tyre on her scoot???

Ooops...I wrote that wrong and just realized it!!!  It WAS NOT and MT16, that is what I ended up putting on for now.  The tire that blew was a GEOMAX MX51.   My bad, I'm still suffering from concussion like effects, I presume.

I always run a little dawn dish detergent around the bead when I seat any tire.  Some worry that that will cause the tire to spin in the wheel but I have never had that problem.

WD-40  40 PSI and if it doesn't seat just let it set for a little while.

Did dawn AND wd-40, but should have stopped at the 40psi!

I know that scary feeling ,Zac.  I blew up a 30 gal air tank one year, It went over the power lines at my house, It probably would have went higher if it wasn't still attached by an air hose to the air compressor.  The compressor was was on an 80 gallon tank,which flipped upside down.  I was about one foot from it when it exploded.  I have a different appreciation for air pressure,now.

So do I RH. That air pressure that blew on us Saturday at lunch was certainly great wasn't it? It gave me a better appreciation for any air this time of year.

Oh, so now Zac is going to throw the Dunlop boys under the bus. What Zac, did Pirelli give you a call and offer up some bucks not to throw them under the bus???

I still hate to see any situation like that happen. Goes to show that the old saying about things in your garage can jump up and bite you at any time, is true. Be careful in there.
